NOTICE OF DEATH - CARROLL SHELBY

It is with regret that the Club has to announce the death of Honorary Member, Carroll Shelby on Friday 11 May 2012 at the age of 89.

Carroll, famously a former chicken farmer, was made an Honorary Member of the BRDC in 1959 following his legendary victory for Aston Martin at the Le Mans 24 hrs race where he partnered Roy Salvadori to the marque’s only outright win at La Sarthe.

The name Shelby became, of course, synonymous with the tuning of American muscle cars and the Cobra and Mustang in particular. More recently Carroll was commissioned by Chrysler Motors to design the supercharged Viper and next year Ford will release his final project; the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 which has been classified as the world’s most powerful production V-8. Carroll was inducted in the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1992.

Funeral details are still to be confirmed, condolences have been passed to Carroll’s wife, Cleo.
