Career Description

Barbara Babbage has been dedicated to motor racing since she was only 16. She bought her first car, (a mini) for thirty pounds and raced it regularly at Long Eaton Stadium in the 12 to 16 year old category.

In 1976 she progressed to Mini- Rods. This was a highly successful time for becoming World, European, British and National Champion. Then in 1982 a move to circuit racing brought her the title of  "Newcomer of the Year". 1983/84 resulted in some good places in the Mini & National Championship and an award for the Best Prepared Car, (Barbara did all of her own preparation).

A breakthrough for Barbara came in 1987 when she recieved full sponsorship for the first time. This was courtesy of Extrastaff Industrial  and Technical Peresonnel. The result was an awesome season in the Uniroyal Production Saloon Championship driving a Suzuki Swift GTI 1300. Barbara nothched up no less than 7 lap records, 6 wins, 7 second places and was the first woman to win a Class Championship only narrowly missing out on overall victory by just one point.

Success continued in 1998 with victories in a BMW M3 despite suffering with a lack of testing and development. Furthermore she became the first woman to win a round of the British Touring Car Championship driving a Group A Toyota Corolla at Donnington Park. She also managed a second place at Brands hatch and scored other top four placings.

In 1990 barbara concentrated on setting up and developing her own business as a Driving Analyst, teaching performance driving and racing techniques. In the October she Married National Rally Champion, Peter Babbage.

Recession in 1991 meant that Barbara only contested three rounds of the Firestone Production Saloon Championship. None the less she scored some good results in an under developed and unproven car, (Mk 2 Suzuki Swift GTI).

The British Racing Drivers Club invited Barbara to Join them in 1992 as an Honourary Member which she was delighted to accept.

Long distance racing in 1993 saw some excellent results. Barbara had been invited to drive for the works Honda Castrol Scholarship Team. The highlight of this time was finishing 2nd in class and 4th overall in the Willhire 24hrs. She also raced the works Peugeot 106XSi which gave her the closest race finish of her career. It was at Silverstone and she was beaten across the line by just one hundreth of a second , even the crowd were on their feet after such an intense battle!

During 1994, the British Racing Driver's Club changed its Articles of Association and Barbara became the first female Full Member of the Club.

Since 1995 Barbara has been working hard to help run her husbands successful suspension company. She is also now a mother of two - Rebecca and James. However the desire to race still burns strong and Barbara is always on the lookout for a drive!
