Career Description

In 1962 at the age of 17 Martin began his racing career.  He drove his year old Lotus 20 FJ which had drum brakes, 4 speed box and a 94bhp engine in 6 club events. He scored a 1st, 2 x 5th, 2 x 6th and a DNF. He was granted a full FIA international licence.

Racing the same car he went on to race at Aintree (11th), Silverstone (14th), Monaco (10th heat, 15th final), Chimay (5th), La Charte (3rd and lap record), Monza Lotteria (4th heat, 7th final), Reaims (8th heat, 11th final), Rouen (10th heat, dnf final), Clermont Ferrand (10th heat, 10th final).

He was then , at the age of 17, put up for election to the BRDC. The board advised his proposer that he had done enough to be elected as a full member but as there was a two year rule at that time he was advised to race for at least another 6 races in 1963.

In 1963 Martin raced a Lotus 22 FJ in International, National and Club events in the Uk with a number of good results.

Aged 18 in December 1963 Martin was elected as a full member of the BRDC.

Sadly Martins plans to race in the 1964 season were halted by the loss of sight in one eye. Indeed this marked the end of his driving career in the sport.
