- 1973 Began racing Hillman Imps.
- 1974 Formula Ford - winning the Scottish Championship.
- 1975 Formula Libre in a March 752 - winning the Scottish Championship.
- 1976 Formula Atlantic in a Modus. Also competed in the British Aurora Championship winning his class. Also contested the Scottish Libre Championship.
- 1977 European F2 - contested selected rounds in a March 772. Also selected rounds of the Aurora AFX British Championship. Won the Scottish Libre Championship.
- 1978 European F2. Won F2 section of British Aurora Championship.
- 1979 Raced a March 792 ground effect car winning the Scottish Championship and the F2 section in the British Championship.
- 1980 Bought Lotus 78 F1 from Emilio Villota achieving two 2nd places and a 3rd.
