The BRDC Golden Helmet race will now take place in April, the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) have announced today.
Scheduled for March, the Golden Helmet was due to be the season-opening Formula Ford 1600 event of the 2006 season, but with the cancellation of the BRDC March race meeting, the Club Department have switched the popular race to their Spring Races on St. George's Day (April 23rd).
The BRDC Spring Races will also host two rounds of the BRDC Historic Sportscar Championship, and a number of yet to be confirmed races for sports, saloon and single-seater cars.
The BRDC Golden Helmet was contested for the first time in 2005 - won by Irish sensation Peter Dempsey. Dempsey's prize was a crash helmet, carrying his colours topped with a golden dome to show him as the Golden Helmet winner.
Dempsey had a hugely successful 2005, winning over 30 FF1600 races. He finished second in the Walter Hayes Trophy and has announced a switch to the Duratec-powered UK Formula Ford Championship for 2006. Indications are though that the Cliff Dempsey Racing driver will return to Silverstone in April to defend his title.
With the cancellation of the March race meeting, Club Department race meetings for 2006 centre on just two weekends. The Golden Helmet Spring Races on April 23rd, and the flagship Walter Hayes Trophy in November.
The BRDC will also administer the BRDC 500, which will take place at Silverstone Classic in July, and the BRDC Historic Sportscar Championship.
Dates for the Historic Championship are scheduled to be released next week, offering a wide selection of meetings for both competitors and spectators alike.
Ends.
